The Vazquez Family, and NY Finest Baseball Club would like to thank everyone who participated in the 3rd Annual Anthony Vazquez Memorial Tournament. This Year was a great success due to the participation and commitment of the attending teams. With newly formed New York State Court Officer Blue Sox, and first year attending Chicago Fire Department Bravest along with LAPD Centurions, New York State Trooper Gray Riders, FDNY Bravest and the host NYPD Finest made the 6 team tournament exciting.

July 18- Due to the rain, the original schedule had to be altered and games had to be moved to Victory field which is an all turf field in order to get the tournament rolling. The first game was Chicago FD vs. a new and improved NY State trooper club. Chicago jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first but the lead wouldn't hold up as the Troopers scored two runs in the 4th, 1 in the fifth and 1 in the sixth to take  the first game by the score of 4-2.
Following that game Chicago FD took on the host NY Finest Club. NYPD scored 4 in the 1st inning but Chicago answered back with 3 of their own runs on a three run Homerun by Chicago FD's Healy. The Finest scored three more in the top of the 3rd but was answered by a two run bottom half  courtesy of a two run homerun by Chicago's Shewchuk. The Finest would hold down Chicago the rest of the way winning the game 9-5.

July 19- The New York State troopers took a 2-1 lead vs. FDNY late into game #3 but fell short of the upset losing 3-2. The close game against a strong FDNY club proved to the rest of the teams in the tournament that the New York State Troopers came to Play.

LAPD held on to defeat Chicago FD 10-6 despite a last inning surge in which Chicago plated 4 runs in the last inning but came up short.

LAPD took on FDNY in the next game in which they scratched across one run losing to the Bravest 6-1.

The New York State Court Officers Blue Sox made their debut vs. NY State Troopers. The Blue Sox fell shy losing 14-9. The Blue sox took on NYPD in the final game of Day #2. NY Finest Picher Ed Gillespie took a no hitter into the last inning before giving up the lead off single to new York State Court Officer's Cuccio. That's all Gillespie would give up as the Finest win 8-0.

July 20 The First game was #1 Seed FDNY vs. #4 Seed LAPD Centurions. LAPD took a 9-3 lead into the 6th but was answered by a 6 run FDNY outburst that would tie the game at 9 all. That was as close as it would get, LAPD scored 5 in the last inning and defeated FDNY 15-9 advancing to the finals.

In the other Semi Final Game,  the #2 seed NYPD took on  the #3 Seed New York State Troopers. The Troopers Jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first. The Finest answered right back scoring three in their half of the inning. In the second inning, the NYPD squad scored seven times enroute to a 14-4 win. The win puts NYPD in the finals against LAPD, which would be a rematch of the 2003 championship game of the Mike Anaya Tournament in San Diego, California.

In the Finals, LAPD struck first in the top of the first inning. LAPD shortstop Soriano stroked a solo homerun of NYPD pitcher Ray Caceres. NYPD would answer back with a RBI single by Lee Jones, scoring Gary Villacres. In the top of the second Homeruns by LAPD's Cambell and Rodriguez made for a 3-1 lead but, Back to back Homeruns by NYPD's Vic Lara and Eric Sorensen tied the game at three all. Soriano led off the third inning with a solo shot that broke the tie. Rich Custudio's two run Homerun in the Bottom half of the third capped a three run rally propelling the Finest to a 6-4 lead. The score remained the same until the Centurions Soriano cranked his third homerun of the game, which was a 2 run shot that knotted the game at six. That would be the score until the bottom of the last inning. NY Finest Gary Villacres hit a lead off, walk off homerun to win the 2007 Anthony Vazquez Memorial Tournament.

2004 Tournament Summary

The Vazquez Family, and NY Finest Baseball Club would like to thank everyone who participated in the first year of the event. We hope all the players, Families and friends enjoyed their stay in NYC. Many players made friends for life from other departments. Many of the teams that participated here in New York will meet again on the playing field in other Tournaments across the country. This Year's tournament  had 6 teams attend including three Major departments outside of the New York area. With Los Angeles, Chicago, and Las Vegas attending we anticipate next year's event to grow.  In the Ten Year History of NY Finest Baseball, This was the first time we hosted a Tournament of any kind. We would like to Thank Everyone who made this event possible and everyone who made it a success. Once again, THANK YOU.

Special Thanks to Richmond County Baseball Umpires Association For donating their time and services for our event. Freddy And the Crew did a great job! Thank You.
